Certain university-hosted or sponsored events may include alcohol, but there are strict regulations regarding its purchase and service. The use of university funds for entertainment must remain compatible with our stewardship responsibilities and maintain a high ethical standard. We must be able to demonstrate that entertainment expenses are necessary and in the best interest of the public.
Frequently Asked Questions: Alcohol Policy
What funds can be used to pay for alcohol?
- Federal and state funds cannot be used to pay for alcohol. Generally, gift or discretionary funds may be used. Please check with Accounting to verify which of your specific department accounts are eligible.
Who can serve alcohol at our UC event?
- The best option is to hire a professional catering company with a valid California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) license.
- All servers must be ABC certified.
- Servers must be 18 or older if alcohol service is incidental to other duties (such as food service).
- Bartenders strictly serving drinks must be 21 or older.
- No one serving alcohol may consume it while working the event.
Tip: Transferring the responsibility of providing and serving alcohol to a licensed and insured hotel, restaurant, or caterer is an excellent way to reduce the university's risk exposure.
Can we use UC students to serve alcohol at our event?
- No. Students are not permitted to serve alcohol at university events.
Is the campus ABC certified?
- No. UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) is not ABC certified and does not hold a campus-wide alcohol license. While the Chancellor can grant certain single-use permits, these events must align with the university's mission and be approved well in advance.
Can we sell alcohol at a UC event?
- No. Selling alcohol is outside the mission of the university and is generally not allowed. (Note: Certain UC-operated facilities, such as The Club, hold limited individual licenses).
Is the university insured for liquor liability?
- Not typically or automatically. Please consult with Risk Management for specific coverage questions.
Where can I find more information?
- Detailed regulations regarding the service of alcohol can be found on the Risk Management Alcohol Use Policy page.
